A serving police officer, Mike Novakowski was notably a member of the tactical intervention group and the organized crime division. He was appointed Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces by the Governor General for his contributions to the maintenance of order. He was also awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. He is also a three-time recipient of the British Columbia Meritorious Service Award.

Mike Novakowski holds a Master of Arts in Leadership and Training from Royal Roads University and a Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University.
