Regularly in the spotlight and often criticized, police powers and duties represent the very foundation of daily policing interventions carried out by thousands of Quebec peace officers. Governed, defined, and regulated by provincial and federal laws such as the Criminal Procedure Code, the Police Act, and the Criminal Code, these police powers and duties aim primarily to maintain a fair balance between public safety and individual rights.
